Ratchet and Clank PS4 Review
Ratchet and Clank is a proof that there is still lot of mileage left in 3D platformer genre. It is less of a remake and more of a updating and revitalizing the franchise at the same time keeping its use of alien worlds, inventive weapons and quirky attitude. Reviving an older franchise can be a huge gamble, but in case of Ratchet and Clank the result is pretty amazing.
Ratchet and Clank is somewhat re mastered version of a Playstation 2 classic video game. It features the same alien world, taking both Ratchet and Clank, his robot friend to various planets. There are plenty of different weapons in the game each weapon has its own upgrade tree to make it even more powerful and effective. Different weapons are useful against different types of enemies such as the bomb glove is a grenade-tossing weapon that is capable of distressing groups of enemies. The Pixelizer is blaster gun that convert enemies into 8-bit explosive pixels and Groovitron weapon can shot funky beats that distracts opponents from attacking.
There is a variety of great gadgets as well, including Tresspasser a device that autohack locked doors and a modification to Clank that turns him into jetpack or magnet boots to climb walls. Gadgets in Ratchet and Clank are more important than weapons, may be because majority of levels are designed for Ratchet to use these items that he has collected. The whole process is streamlined beautifully as necessary gadgets are automatically provided to you through interaction points which allow you to focus on weapons and upgrades that suit your play style.
This remake of Ratchet and Clank offers great hidden areas and side objectives in different level. When you have a necessary gadget, you can go back to previously visited planet to access area that is inaccessible without the use of that particular item. This provides a great amount of content to players in this remake.
Objectives in a different levels flows a traditional format where you visit planets, defeat different enemies and then move forward to save another planet. Your objective rarely changes in the overall progress of a game; however, the ways in which things are achieved do change over the course of time. One level may be puzzle-focused and another may offer dogfight in the sky where Ratchet has to destroy enemy warships.
The story in Ratchet and Clank begins with a captive Captain Qwark who is a leader of Galactic Rangers. Throughout the game, Qwark narrates the story; he is attractive for an egotistical buffoon. Captain Qwark’s narration is vital to Ratchet and Clank’s charm. Qwark is sometimes unreliable, exaggerating parts of the story just to make it seem more heroic and grandiose. Other times, he comments on Ratchet’s actions, passing remarks about player’s lack of gadgets and movement.
Captain Qwark is not the only notable performer in the game, almost every character in Ratchet and Clank has plenty of quirkiness in their personalities. The strength of every character is really important, because the story of Ratchet and Clank is not the strongest element of the game. The game has a basic story about two unfortunate misfits who set out to save the galaxy from disaster at the hands of ravenous and crazy antagonists. Other than an awkward and rushed ending, there is nothing unforgivable about it. It just provides a vehicle for the characters that outshine everything in the narrative.
Ratchet and Clank’s deluxe quality is its visuals. Everything about the visuals is completely stunning, from character animations to environmental design. Every planet in the game looks different with dazzling texture and color on the screen. Ratchet and Clank uses personality aspects of characters such as sunglasses of Skid McMarx and sickly pallor of evil Chairman Drek to make them stunning.
The animations are gorgeous, lending characters flexibility in their movement that makes them appear more fluid. These beautiful animations, vibrant environments and detailed particle effects make this game visually magnificent.
This Ratchet and Clank is every bit as vibrant and fun as the original. It is appealing and entertaining, an absolute fantasy fueled by rockets and gadgets. Surely, introducing a classic title to new generation is a very difficult task, but Ratchet and Clank is a perfect example.
