Samorost 3 Review
Samorost 3 is an indie puzzle and point & click adventure game from Amanita Design. We know Amanita Design for Machinarium and Botanicula. Samorost 3 is a sequel in the Samorost series where you explore 9 different, unique and stunning worlds in search for your mysterious origins.
The game is full of stunning visuals, captivating and aesthetic sound design that instill the game with mystical charm, yet its underwhelming puzzles draw you away from the surreal beauty of experience with moments of confusion and frustration. Samorost 3 has inventive look and immersive music but the gameplay is notable conventional. Still, the overall experience and presentation of the game conclusively eclipse the frailty of puzzles.
The game’s setting is pleasing but it entices you in parts because it does not explain too much about its strange worlds. Your character is a childlike nameless space gnome who lives on an ornate green island that hangs somewhere in space. When the game starts a musical instrument falls from the sky, our character quickly pick that us and discovers that he can play back and listen the melodies of various objects in the world. When you play the mysterious instrument different animated spirits appears who carry different hints that relate to your surroundings.
Your musical instrument is the only object in the game that helps you solve different puzzles, in other words you can say that your character only knows the language of music, because there is no texts in the game whatsoever, your character only speak gibberish. The soundtrack grooves as you progress in the game and mostly the puzzle solving mechanism relays specifically on melodies. The soundtrack that plays different unusual instruments really makes the atmosphere more like alien.
This alien like atmosphere is also enforced by distinct and stunning art style that uses astonishing mix of elements and fantastic photorealistic textures. While traveling in space and exploring different worlds you will meet different characters and objects such as bearded tree people, inexplicable machinery, massive musical beatles and countless other distinct wonders.
There is no clear goal or motive for your adventure; you can peek through a picture book in your home that hints at the adventure ahead but there’s no established mission for you. For this, you have to finish the game. For most of the time, you are simply left to explore your surroundings until you approach some unfamiliar closure.
This process is really joyful because there’re not instructions. Each Level is jumbled with interactive objects. These objects do not contribute to your progress in the game they are simply there to reward curious gamers. Some small puzzles in Samorost 3 are really beautiful and will make your experience memorable; you can make field mouse dance, pick a flower or can assemble singing termites. But there is no purpose or clear goal behind all this, and the sense of discovery and wonder dims as the hours pass and larger puzzles slice away from your reach.
The puzzles in Samorost 3 are good you may feel some puzzles difficult but you won’t get stuck on any level. Many Puzzles in the game articulate on exceptionally ingenious visual cues, logic and suspicion. Sometimes you will need to go back to previous area or may be repeating the same action again and again without any indication of whatsoever.
The puzzles will not become challenging over time and you will not fill your inventory with different items. You will solve the last and final puzzle in the same manner as you solved the first one. Smorost 3’s gameplay has great amount of puzzles but the stress is on the beauty of world rather than solving puzzles. Thankfully, you will at least have a helpful book that displays hints for solving different puzzles without telling you what exactly to do.
You may get bored of Samorost 3’s puzzles but stunning worlds in the game will help you keep moving and you will never feel tired. Stunning art style, aesthetic sound design, breathtaking visuals and mystical presentation really makes Samorost 3 a beautiful game.
